Put down the phone! A new law prohibits the use of handheld phones in areas of road construction, maintenance or utility work, where workers are present and at risk from traffic.
On March 30, 2016 Governor Scott Walker signed a bill that imposes a fine of $20 to $40 for drivers who get caught violating the new law. A second violation within one year would bring a fine up to $100. The bill makes exception for drivers using a voice-operated or hands-free device, and allows the use of handheld phones to report an emergency.
